Endoscopic microwave coagulation had been a piled to 72 patients at Hiratsuka Gastroenterological Hospital during the period from April 1983 to November 1985. Among these 72 cases, we examined 24 patients with early gastric cancer and 6 patients with group III lesion in the stomach.
The patients were followed-up for maximum 31 months, 5 cases of these were considered to have been cured radically. Biopsy showed positive residual lesions were seen in only 2 cases out of 24 patients with early gastric cancer, and in only 1 case out of 6 patients with group III gastric lesion by Novermber 1985. No case showed complications such as hemorrhage and/or perforation by this procedure. Therefore, this method may be considered to be a technique applicable to eartain type of gastric cancer at early stage for radical cure.
However, the residual lesion was observed in 7 cases out of 24 patients with early gastric cancer and in 3 cases out of 6 patients with group III lesion after endoscopic topical treatment. All of these cases were treated again and 2 cases subsequently received gastrectomy. We consider that our method should be performed on the carefully selected cases considering the limitation of the method. Other available endoscopic treatment for malignant lesion can be also combined with our method.
